I am an experienced anatomical pathologist and professor of pathology at the University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Sciences and Technology (UMFST), Targu Mures Romania, with subspecialty expertise in gynecologic and breast pathology and cytology. I have published over 400 publications and 20 medical books as main author and/or editor. I am currently the Chair of the Gynecologic Pathology Working Group (European Society of Pathology). Romania has the highest incidence and mortality related to cervical cancer in Europe, so my main interest is related to cervical pathology. Recently, together with colleagues from Romania as well as other countries from Europe and other continents, I have worked toward improving the screening program and the diagnosis and management of cervical cancer. Also, we have worked on the traditional histologic classification scheme of adenocarcinoma of the cervix pushing toward a new classification linked to aetiology (HPV infection) which has a clinical impact providing a robust framework for the development of tailored cancer treatments for patients with endocervical cancer. We are currently working on the molecular characterization of the different histologic types of adenocarcinoma of the cervix as well as identifying new markers related to different patterns of invasion.
